I do not support PeTA, but I do agree 100% with this ad.

At the same time, I see irony in this - remember

Please be advised that this bulletin does contain graphic material that may be too painful and disturbing for some viewers. If you are easily emotional, please do NOT read this bulletin or please view with caution. We apologize if this bulletin offends PETA or PETA members/supporters, but this case did touch on many issues and the innocent victims who were lost and never received justice at least deserve a voice to remind everyone of their senseless deaths. This bulletin is meant to educate and remind people of this tragic incident that cost many innocent and healthy baby animals their lives. We are hoping that by reminding everyone of this terrible incident, it will caution people not to give up their beloved animals to anyone claiming to find them a better home because even if they are with an organization with seemingly good intentions, animal abusers are everywhere and take on many forms. Please do not let this tragedy happen again and please do not allow the laws and justice system to allow these vicious murderers and abusers to be let free without any form of suitable punishment. Murder is murder regardless of the difference in species. These innocent animals deserved justice and were denied. Please be their voice and do not allow their death to have been in vain..

In the early hours of June 15, 2005, two employees of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) were arrested in Ahoskie, North Carolina, and charged with 31 felony counts of cruelty to animals. A Grand Jury later indicted each defendant on 21 counts of Animal Cruelty and 3 counts of Obtaining Property By False Pretenses. PETA employees Andrew Cook and Adria Hinkle are expected to face a trial in Hertford County (NC) Superior Court on November 13, 2006. A few days after the arrests, local authorities told Greenville, North Carolina's WNCT-TV News that they had found more than 70 additional dead animals that may be connected to PETA..

When Ahoskie police arrested Cook and Hinkle, they discovered 18 dead animals in a shopping-center dumpster (including a bag containing dead puppies), and 13 more dead animals (including two kittens) in the PETA-owned van the two were driving. Police observed them throwing several dark-colored bags into the dumpster before the arrests were made. The animal-cruelty investigator for the Northampton County (North Carolina) sheriff's department shared her outrage with the Virginian-Pilot a few days after the arrests: "Some animals have to be euthanized," she told the paper, "but the way this crowd did it is sick"..

Witnesses from the Bertie County (NC) Animal Shelter and the Ahoskie Animal Hospital later confirmed that the defendants had collected animals earlier that day on the promise that PETA would find them adoptive homes. And a Bertie County deputy sheriff told reporters that Cook and Hinkle assured the shelter "they were picking up the dogs to take them back to Norfolk where they would find them good homes," later adding that persons identifying themselves as PETA representatives have picked up live dogs from that shelter during the last two months. These once healthy dogs were found dead and thrown out as if they were garbage..

Ahoskie veterinarian Dr. Patrick Proctor told reporters that his staff gave a perfectly healthy cat and her two newborn kittens to Hinkle and Cook. "This cat and two kittens I gave them last week," he said, "were in good health and were very adoptable, especially the kittens." Dr. Proctor later added in the Virginian-Pilot: "These were just kittens we were trying to find homes for. PETA said they would do that, but these cats never made it out of the county". One Norfolk television station aired a heartbreaking interview with the manager of the supermarket whose dumpster became an impromptu pet cemetery. "They just slung the doors [open] and started throwing dogs ... beautiful cats. I saw a [dead] beagle last week that was pregnant ... last week it was 23 or 24 dogs ... it's happened to us nine times ... they drove straight from there, straight here, and disposed of the dogs in 30 seconds"..

Another TV news report in PETA's home town revealed in June 2005 that Hinkle and Cook were not licensed to euthanize animals. "We have no records of training PETA employees," a Virginia Department of Agriculture spokesperson told Norfolk, Virginia's WAVY-TV10 News, "because we were informed that euthanasia was being done by a local veterinarian." Neither defendant has a veterinary degree..

The Trial against the murderers

According to the new felony warrants, the charges of Obtaining Property by False Pretenses allege that Hinkle and Cook removed healthy animals from shelters and veterinary offices under the false promise that adoptive homes would be found for them. When the two were arrested in June, police found 31 dead animals which had been obtained only hours earlier. They also found several vials of the narcotics pentobarbital and ketamine.

Felony animal cruelty charges against the pair - Adria Hinkle, 28, and Andrew Cook, 26 - were reduced to misdemeanors by a judge who said the prosecution hadn't proved malice or motive, and then to a single charge of littering by a jury. The prosecutor left the courtroom without talking to reporters..

The Verdict – Injustice for the innocent lives lost

Two employees for an animal rights group were cleared Friday of charges that they cruelly killed cats and dogs. Felony animal cruelty charges against the pair - Adria Hinkle, 28, and Andrew Cook, 26 - were reduced to misdemeanors by a judge who said the prosecution hadn't proved malice or motive, and then to a single charge of littering by a jury. The prosecutor left the courtroom without talking to reporters. They were only found guilty of littering convictions -- for throwing out the dead animals who were entrusted to them to find a good and loving home but instead murdered them without mercy and without remorse. Is this justice? These victims deserved justice and were denied..

After a two-week trial that caused a sensation in rural northeastern North Carolina, a jury acquitted Andrew B. Cook and Adria J. Hinkle of eight counts of animal cruelty. Cook and Hinkle work for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals(PETA), based in Norfolk, Va. Hinkle also was found not guilty of three felony counts of lying to get healthy cats from a veterinarian's office. In closing arguments Friday, prosecutor Valerie Asbell painted Hinkle as a liar who gushed over kittens and puppies, promised to find them homes and then gave them lethal injections beside secluded country roads. Cook, both sides agreed, was a new PETA employee just helping Hinkle for the day..

Each was ordered to pay about $4,000 in fines and restitution and be on supervised probation for one year

Employees of an Ahoskie veterinarian testified that Hinkle had asked whether a mother cat and two kittens had names, and promised everyone in the office, including a 9-year-old girl, that she would find them homes. She euthanized them a few minutes after leaving the office. A Bertie County animal control officer testified that Hinkle said she would have "no problem" finding homes for two dalmatians named Annie and Toby. The dogs were dead before they left the shelter's parking lot..

The same officer said he handed over his own dog, a terrier named Happy, because he had had trouble housebreaking it. Hinkle sent him a picture of the dog in a garden, standing in front of a house but didn't mention that the dog had been euthanized upon arriving at PETA headquarters..
Burning candle for fallen animals
"They go out and say, 'Oh, we helped all these animals,'" said Asbell, who is the district attorney for Hertford, Bertie and Northampton counties. "They sure aren't out telling folks they're killing healthy ones ... because that doesn't go along with the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals"..

If the topic of this bulletin offended or upset anyone, we apologize but please keep in mind that we are here to speak on behalf of all animals whose lives were ruined or lost by those who committed such unspeakable and horrific acts of animal cruelty. We are here to give these innocent animals a voice so that we can try to prevent this cruelty from harming and/or destroying any more lives because even one case of animal cruelty that goes unpunished is not and will not be acceptable. These innocent animals were murdered by two sadistic and heartless individuals claiming that they wanted to help find their victims a good home, only to kill them without reason and without remorse. The veterinary clinic, the veterinarian and countless trusting individuals believed these two murderers and trusted them to find good homes for those beautiful animals, but only had that trust turned into tragedy..
Photobucket
Please do not allow these animals’ deaths to have been in vain because they were given no mercy or justice. Please at least give them a voice so that this tragedy never happens again. This incident should never have happened and these innocent lives should never have been lost. Please be a voice on behalf of these murder victims who could have found a home with a family who would have loved them and given them a long, happy and healthy life without any fear or pain. These innocent animals were murdered and their murderers left unpunished. Please prevent this from ever happening again. These animals need us.. Who will be their voice?
